1. Chalmers Clan History
This surname, also seen as Chambers, has its roots in the French word 'chambre', much like the name Chamberlain.
Hugh de Camera made appearances as a witness to charters by both David I and Malcolm IV.
Richard de Camera was noted as a witness to two charters of William the Lion.
Robert and William de la Chaumbre from Lanarkshire pledged their allegiance in 1296.
Willmus de Camera served as a common councillor of Aberdeen in 1399, while Alexander Chaumir was elected as sarjeant in 1475.
In 1474, Alexander of Chamowr represented the commoners and merchants of Aberdeen, and Gilbert de Chamer assumed the role of alderman in the same year.
Thomas Chamer became a burgess of Aberdeen in 1521, and in Glasgow, a parcel of land exchanged hands to John Chalmyr in 1555.
Chalmers Close, situated off the bustling High Street in Edinburgh, owes its name to Patrick Chalmers, Captain of the Trained Bands, who resided there in 1682.
The Chalmers family maintained ownership of the Gadgirth estate in Ayrshire for over five centuries.

A note on Coats of Arms:
Under Scottish heraldic law, a coat of arms is granted to an individual, except in cases of civic or corporate arms. Contrary to popular belief, there is no concept of a "family coat of arms." Each coat of arms is personal, and only the individual to whom it is granted has the right to use it.
